I think this is one of the greatest ideas to hit the internet since the 56K modem!!!

  2. Feeling the need for “internet” speed. With a major corporate headquarters and a branch of Mayo Clinic in town we could sure use and support this! Google and Austin growing together.

This could make such a huge impact for patients at AMC. Awesome way for Google to associate themselves with a health care leader, in Mayo Clinic, when reform is the headlines on the daily news!

  4. More from Austin, Minnesota spokesperson, Spammy!

Bring it on! I like the idea that it is fiber based – we have enough electrons running through our body today – and no long term study on what it does to our body ant thinking power. Austin really is a Cool Community, moving forward with environmental and educational issues at the speed of Google. We want the infrastructure that supports our community, supports the local economy, helps the state of Minnesota and eventually all the rest of our national economy. Welcome Google!

I support bringing Google Fiber to Austin, Mn.! For a small rural community, we sure have a lot going on. We are so fortunate George Hormel chose Austin to start his meat packing plant over 100 years ago and to give back so much to the community. Google would be the icing on the cake.

  20. The Internet in this town is quite far from developed. With only one ISP (Charter Communications) in the town offering speeds that many people would even deem acceptable, a fiber connection would give many people the boost they need to make the Internet come alive. Having a connection to the Internet isn’t enough when it takes more time to load a page than it does to read its content.

Accessible 1 gigabit broadband connections are almost vital here. The town is ever-growing, while its current Internet connections have only increased slightly over the past few years.

  22. The latest “We Gig It” update from Hormel Foods…

AUSTIN, Minn., Mar 24, 2010 — Anyone who says the Internet is no place for spam simply isn’t thinking about the right kind of SPAM(R) product. And today Hormel Foods is calling on the “SPAM(TM) army” to prove it!

The company is urging lovers of the SPAM(R) family or products everywhere to help amp up the presence of SPAM(R) products — the right kind, that is — on the Internet. Austin, Minn., the hometown to the SPAM(R) family or products is vying to become a Google Fiber City, a community willing to serve as a test bed for ultra-high-speed Internet access, so Hormel Foods is asking consumers to sign onto http://googleaustinmn.com , click on the “Nominate Austin” tab to support the hometown bid, and encourage others in their social circles to do the same. Voting ends on Friday, March 26.

“No matter where they live, lovers of the SPAM(R) family of products have a unique connection to Austin, where their favorite luncheon meat was born 73 years ago,” said Julie H. Craven, vice president for corporate communications at Hormel Foods Corporation. “Now’s the time for these fans to act as one and help us bring the SPAM(R) brand — and all of the other things Austin has to offer — to the rest of the world and vice-versa more quickly and with greater connectivity than ever before.”

Although it’s competing against much larger cities, Austin, Minn.’s diversity makes it an ideal candidate for Google’s Fiber City project. In addition to being home to Hormel Foods, the city offers a “heart-of-America” mix of large and small businesses, cutting-edge research and medical facilities, city-owned utilities and rural and agricultural interests.

To SPAM(TM) fans, though, Austin has a more important mark of distinction: It’s where 400 cans of their favorite food are produced every minute.

“We’re excited about Austin’s bid and want to give others an opportunity to be part of this movement,” Craven said. “That’s why we’re reaching out to the best fan base in the world: Who better than SPAM(R) lovers to make the Internet safe for SPAM(R) products again?!”

  27. Our Austin, MN community would benefit greatly from Google’s Fiber Network!

  28. I think it would be wonderful for Austin. The high speed internet would attract high tech businesses to the area and it would revitalize the economy. It would be great for the community college, as students and teachers would be able to get more studying done in a short period of time. The high tech internet would make Riverland more attractive to potential students and more wonderful teachers.

As retired President/CEO of Accentra Credit Union I know we and our membership would all benefit from gigabyte fibre in the community. Our members access to Home Banking would be significantly enhanced. The membership has been on the upper end of acceptance to accessing their finances via Home banking our participation has been much better than peers in other communities.

Additionally I feel the addition of the google “Gig” could be a help in growing the community with new high tech jobs. We have a forward looking community and the entire project would be well received and it would provide an excellent platform for Google as a test market. Accentra Credit Union and our over 10,000 member GIG IT!
